HUBBARDSTON – James W. Hansgate II, beloved husband of Catherine (Sauer) Hansgate, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer. Born in Buffalo, NY and raised in nearby West Seneca, Jim was the eldest son of the late James and Marie (Sadowsky) Hansgate. After graduating from West Seneca High School, he went on to further his education, earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree as well as a Master’s Degree in Chemical & Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He had a long, successful career as a chemical engineer including some opportunities for international travel. Annual family trips were used to see many beautiful places around the US and abroad. His love for adventure was fulfilled by lots of motorcycling and bicycling: racing, touring and sharing the rides with family and friends. He enjoyed competition- both in sports growing up and while playing games with friends and family. He fully embraced the role of grandpa and found toddler-friendly adventures at every visit. He cared about the environment and came back to a connection to the land when he and Cathy purchased an organic farm, and took daily walks through the forests at home and around the region. If the sun was out and the weather was nice he wanted to be outside and thought everyone else should be too. He was also an avid reader. He loved listening to music and played guitar for a number of years. Jim will be lovingly missed and remembered by his family - wife of 45 years, Cathy; his three daughters, Ann D’Ambruoso (and her husband, John), April Wobst (and her husband, Greg) and Allison Hansgate; his 4 grandchildren: Virgil, Alma, Liam and Zoe; his 3 siblings and their spouses; 13 nieces and nephews, and his in-laws – along with former coworkers, neighbors, and many dear friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, at 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. There will be a luncheon reception held at the Rod and Gun Club on Williamsville Rd in Hubbardston from 1-4 pm.
