Mary Lou (Potterfield) Thompson

HOLDEN / RUTLAND - Mary Lou (Potterfield) Thompson, 87, formerly of Holden and Rutland, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Sherwood Oaks, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.

She was born and raised in Hagerstown, MD, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Margaret E. (Levi) Potterfield. She graduated from Hagerstown High School. Mary Lou and her family lived in several areas of the country before settling in Holden in 1972, where she resided for the next 40 years. She then lived in Rutland before moving to Pennsylvania a short time ago. Mary Lou worked for many years as an administrative assistant. She began as a stenographer in Washington DC during World War II. Later, she worked for Directocom and Anacomp Micrographics. She retired as the secretary for the president of Lutco in Worcester. Mary Lou was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, and later attended First Baptist Church of Holden for several years, where she was active in its Lydian League. She also loved music and the stage and theater. She was a member of the Master Singers of Worcester and Central Mass Onstage Theater Group. Mary Lou was one of the founding member of, "TEMPO", a booster club to support and encourage the music department of Wachusett Regional High School. She also shared her time reading to the 3rd and 4th graders at Holden Christian Academy.

Mary Lou was the beloved wife of the late Richard Thompson. She is survived by her three daughters, Barbara Lyn Marsh and her husband, Charles of Cranberry, PA, Pamela A. Sheehan of Chincoteague Island, VA and Beth B. Lundergan and her husband, David of Rutland; her five grandchildren, Brooke and Nathan Patterson, Hannah (Patterson) and her husband Mike Haney, Jessica Sheehan and Bridget Lundergan.

Family and friends are invited to gather with the family on Saturday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. followed by a Service Celebrating Mary Lou's Life at 1 p.m., in the First Baptist Church of Holden, 1216 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be private in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Memorial donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to the Holden Christian Academy, 279 Reservoir Street, Holden, MA 01520; or to TEMPO, c/o Wachusett Regional High School, 1401 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
