Walter A. Koenig

HOLDEN – Walter A. Koenig, 88, of Malden St., died at home on Friday, January 16, 2009.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Jean H. (Simmerer) Koenig; three sons, Stephen J. Koenig and his wife Sandra of Holden, Walter D. Koenig and his wife Cindy of Auburn and Mark R. Koenig and his wife Robin of Petersham; a daughter, Rebecca J. Raymond and her husband James of Wells, Vermont: and seven grandchildren, Travis, Mitchell, Alex, Derek, Gregg, Emily and Amy; a niece and two nephews. A brother, Dr. Emil J. Koenig, Jr., predeceased him in 2003.

Walter was born in Holden, son of Emil J. and Ella (Leupelt) Koenig, Sr. and lived in Holden all of his life. He was a graduate of Holden High School and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at University of Massachusetts Amherst. Walter served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre, Battery C 630th Field Artillery Battalion, where he was awarded a bronze star medal and Croix de Guerre avec d'argent medal.

He was a valuable member of the community who donated many hours of service as one of the original Holden Town Planning Board members, a volunteer fireman for 25 years for the Town of Holden retiring as a Lieutenant, a Boy Scouts leader, member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, and member and treasurer of the Wachusett Old Car Club. He was a board member and Superintendent for Grove Cemetery until his retirement. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed the outdoors as an avid fisherman and hunter with a great deal of interest in wildlife, especially birds.

A memorial service for Walter will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th, in the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street, Holden. Spring burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holden Association of Firefighters, P.O. Box 90, Holden, MA 01520; or a charity of one's choice. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is directing arrangements.
