RUTLAND - Allen Elbag, 87, of Rutland, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Roxbury after an illness.
Allen is survived and will be greatly missed by his son, Mark Elbag and his wife Mary; two daughters, Glenna I. Sullivan and her husband Michael, and Louise B. DiMarzio and her husband Guy, all of Rutland; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was born in Worcester and lived 60 years in Rutland.
After attending Worcester Boy’s Trade High School, Allen enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country as a corporal with Company I, of the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division from 1943 to 1945. His division embarked on numerous campaigns throughout the European African Theatre including: Normandy, Northern France, and Central Europe. In 1945, Allen was captured by the Germans and held in a concentration camp until his release at the end of the war. He was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge.
Allen was a licensed insurance agent and worked for 30 years for John Hancock Life Insurance Co. in Worcester. He was also a talented landscape designer and meticulously maintained the grounds at Miles Funeral Home in Holden for over 30 years. Allen was passionate about landscaping, and in 1987, was awarded the New England Grounds Manager of the Year for his dedicated efforts and expertise.
He was a member of the First Unitarian Church in Worcester, Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland, and a long time member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland. Allen had a robust zest for life and found comfort in the simple things that most take for granted. He was a devoted family man and looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren. His kind nature and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire his family and all who knew him.
A private remembrance service honoring Allen’s life was held on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Friend, Inc., 21 Cedar Street, Worcester, MA 01605; or to Rural Cemetery, Inc., Fountain Restoration Project, P.O.
