WORCESTER – Antoni J. Jakubosky, 95, of Worcester, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after a brief period of declining health. Born in Worcester on October 11, 1917, Antoni was the son of Polish immigrants, Gabriel G. and Marcella (Charmialchuk) Jakubosky, lived all of his life in Worcester and graduated from Classical High School in 1939.
On November 11, 1942, Antoni enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corp, 7th Aircraft Maintenance Floating Unit. He honorably served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Mariana Islands in the Western Pacific Theatre. After returning home from the war, Antoni met and fell in love with Grace L. Grazulis at a local dance in Worcester; they later married on July 5, 1948.
While raising his family, Antoni attended Worcester Junior College with a concentration in engineering. He worked as an engineer at Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp. in Clinton until starting his own company in Worcester, All-Temp Conveyer Co., which he ran until his retirement at the age of 70. He possessed a strong faith and was a founding member of St. George Church in Worcester, its Men’s Club and was captain of the coffee shop for 30 years.
In his youth, Antoni was an active member of the Ionic Boy’s Club in Worcester and played semi-pro basketball for the “Blackhawks”. He later coached baseball for Schwartz Little League and basketball for Norton Co League. He was proud of his Polish heritage and was a passionate dancer and particularly enjoyed travelling with his wife to many line dancing events in Worcester County. He travelled with his wife extensively throughout the world including trips to Greece, South America and Mexico. Antoni and Grace spent over 15 years wintering at Cocoa Beach in Florida and spent many a summer at Pine Acres in Oakham with their children.
Antoni was a true naturalist and enjoyed seasonally hunting for and gathering Hickory nuts, all sorts of berries, mushrooms, and was known for his pesto sauce. He could also be found working in his garden, playing golf with his friends, or fishing at a local pond or stream. In 1982, while playing Golf at Pine Ridge in Oxford with his friends, he hit his one and only hole-in-one. In his spare time, Antoni even performed as an extra in the Jodi Foster movie “Contact” which was filmed in Florida.
Antoni enjoyed the company of others and was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. His greatest joy in life was his spending time with his family. The legacy he leaves his family is the example he set through his unconditional love and devotion to his wife.
Antoni is survived and will lovingly missed by his wife of 64 years, Grace L.(Grazulis) Jakubosky; a daughter, Christina L. Quist and her husband Ronald of West Dennis; three sons, Philip J. Jakubosky of West Boylston, Andrew V. Jakubosky and his wife Wendy Jo of Leominster and Gerald G. Jakubosky and his wife Brenda Barnes of Brookfield; a sister, Helen Montville of St. Petersburg, FL; four grandchildren, Corina Quist of New York City, NY, Amanda Wilson of Worcester, Kathleen Miller and her husband Derek of Phippsburg, Maine and David Jakubosky of Boston; a great-granddaughter, Evelyn Wilson; and several nephews and nieces. His sister, Mary Benoit, predeceased him.
