SHREWSBURY/NEWTON - Nora Antoun Hakim, 90, formerly a 68 year resident of Shrewsbury, died peacefully under the care of her family and the staff at the Stone Institute in Newton on Tuesday, July 26, 2011. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Ameen J. and Sophie (Farage) Antoun.
Nora leaves her family of five children: Clifford, Clyde, Geoffrey, Christopher, and Melanie, and their father Adnan J. Hakim. Nora is also survived by her grand-children: Benjamin, Natalie, Adam, Gabriella, and Jeremy.
She graduated from New York University in 1943 with a BS in Education. She became a speech therapist and educator and actively volunteered with the Red Cross during World War II, serving in the Japanese Internment Camps in Arizona and on Virginia Beach, providing education and entertainment programs for wounded U.S. officers.
While raising her family, Nora served as chairman of the Shrewsbury School Committee and held the same post with the finance committee. In these roles she led with her vision bringing fresh perspectives and programs into the schools and town, including a child/parent development curriculum that thrives today.
A phrase that captures Nora is "Try anything at anytime in your life––be creative." She was a prolific poet, sculptor, and painter, expressing through her art the nuances of life as well as her travels. For example, Nora lived and went to college in New York City and painted "New York, New York" a vibrant, award-winning still life of apples.
In her philosophy and actions of life Nora was ahead of her time, inspiring people to express themselves, volunteer in their community, be curious about the world, travel, enjoy and preserve the beauty on this earth, and do work that contributes to others.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 90 Holden Street, Worcester. A memorial fund in her name has been established with the Red Cross: American Red Cross of Central Mass., 2000 Century Drive, Worcester, MA 01606, or on-line,
