STERLING – Elizabeth A. (Peoples) Rugg, 86, of Maple Street, died on Saturday, May 24, 2008, in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
Her beloved husband of 54 years, Edgar E. Rugg, Sr., died in 1999. She is survived by her sons, Arthur E. Rugg and his wife Julie of Londonderry, New Hampshire, and E. Earle Rugg, Jr. and his wife Pamela of Ogunquit, Maine; daughters, Elizabeth A. Patterson and her husband John of Austin, Texas, Janet Rugg Lew and her husband Mark of Brooklyn, New York, Mary-Ellen Ash and her husband James of Sterling, and Kristin C. Foley and her husband Timothy of Killingworth, Connecticut; a brother, Rollin E. Peoples of New Jersey; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Loren R. Peoples and a sister, Vera H. Churchel predeceased her. She was born in Bridgewater, Vermont, the daughter of Ralph E. and Emma A. (Hubbard) Peoples, and lived in East Princeton before moving to Sterling in 1944.
Mrs. Rugg graduated from Major Edwards High School in West Boylston in 1939. She attended Worcester Girls Trade School in Worcester, where she later taught cooking. She was a longtime member of the First Church in Sterling, the Sterling Historical Society, and the Temple Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Leominster. For over forty years she volunteered and was Past Mother Advisor of Clinton Assembly #99, International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and was past Grand Deputy for the Massachusetts organization.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester, Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral service for Mrs. Rugg will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28th, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Rd., Sterling. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564.
