Barbara (Dean) Lewis

December 7, 1947 — February 24, 2013

HOLDEN – Barbara (Dean) Lewis, 65, of Blossom Square, died peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester after a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Holyoke, Barbara was the daughter of Harold J. and Vera (Canfield) Dean.

She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, John F. Lewis, Jr.; her beloved children, Michael D. Lewis and his wife Lilias of Shrewsbury, Jennifer E. Gruber and her husband Eric of North Attleboro, and Jessica A. Schneider and her husband John of Sturbridge; six grandchildren, Jake and Kyle Gruber, Jack and Katie Schneider and Evan and Colin Lewis; and four cousins, Marilyn Dudas, Marilyn and John Daly and Mary Ellen Stroud.

Barbara was a graduate of Holyoke High School and Bridgewater State College majoring in Physical Education. She worked over 20 years for the Wachusett Regional School District as a physical education teacher and particularly enjoyed working with students in the adaptive physical education program. After her retirement in 2006, Barbara immersed herself in her grandchildren’s activities as well as those at The Seasons at Salisbury Condominiums in Holden where she served on several committees. She enjoyed playing bridge, kayaking and going to the beach with her husband on Cape Cod or in Maine. Barbara loved the ocean and always marked the beginning of summer with a trip to Newport, RI where they would take a sailing excursion followed by dinner on the dock at the Black Pearl.

She will be remembered for her dedication and devotion to her family, friends, students and, of course, her ever present mischievous sense of humor.

Family and friends will honor and remember Barbara’s life by gathering for calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden before leaving in procession to St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, Finance Dept., 30 East 33rd Street, New York, New York 10016 ( www.kidney.org/donate ).
