OAKHAM/SHREWSBURY – Bernice S. (Judson) Carpenter, 82, passed away at Parsons Hill Nursing Home on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Her husband of 61 years, Byron A. Carpenter, Jr., passed away in 2012. She leaves three sons, Byron A. Carpenter, III and his wife Ellen of Oakham, Warren E. Carpenter and his wife Jaydee Garcia and Judson P. Carpenter, all of Las Vegas; a daughter, Susan E. Getz and her husband William of Portland, ME; a brother, Franklin Judson of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Nancy Curran of Meredith, NH and Dorothy Ingerson of Florida; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. Bernice was predeceased by her brother, William Judson.
Bernice was born in Shrewsbury, the daughter of Franklin C. and Ruth H. (Fairbanks) Judson and had lived most of her life in Shrewsbury before moving to Oakham in 1993. She worked in Shrewsbury at the Calvin Coolidge Elementary School cafeteria and later worked at Child World. Bernice was a dedicated member of Lake View Congregational Church in Worcester and taught Sunday school there for many years. She also was a member and past worthy matron of the Stella Chapter #3, Order of the Eastern Star in Shrewsbury. Bernice was a talented seamstress who shared her skills as a long-time 4H leader guiding countless young people in weekly classes she held in her home. She loved children, spending time with her family and friends and always appreciated a good practical joke. Her sense of humor and laughter has and will continue to be greatly missed.
Bernice’s family extends deep appreciation to the wonderful caregivers and her “extended family” at Parson’s Hill Alzheimer’s Unit and also to Brookhaven Hospice. Their professional, compassionate and skilled care allowed Bernice the best possible quality of life which brought much comfort to her family.
A memorial service for Bernice will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the Lake View Congregational Church, 115 Coburn Ave. , Worcester, MA 01604. A private committal service will be held at South Cemetery in Oakham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lake View Congregational Church.
