SUTTON – Carl P. Sherr, age 95, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, surrounded by the loving presence of his family. Born in Worcester, Carl was the son of Isadore and Emma (Zagan) Sherr.
In 1964, Carl founded Carl P. Sherr & Co., LLC, a small investment office that grew into a family-run financial advisory firm after his sons, Gary and Ed, joined him. He took pride in the firm’s evolution, in sharing his expertise as an expert witness in stock market arbitration cases and trials, and in his leadership as president of the NASD (now FINRA), which oversaw the NASDAQ market and upheld the integrity of the capital markets.
His many affiliations included being an active member of Temple Emanuel, where he served as president of the Temple Brotherhood, and was also a member of the Masonic Level Lodge A.F. & A.M.
Carl developed a lifelong passion for fishing on his beloved Martha’s Vineyard, his home away from home. Weekend charters soon turned into years of adventures aboard his own boat, forming close friendships with locals and often returning with a bounty of fish to share with neighbors. He looked forward to the annual Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby and, even after he could no longer compete, proudly registered each year. He also enjoyed digging for local shellfish—despite not eating it himself—simply for the joy of the experience, often bringing it home for Joyce to turn into fresh chowder.
Carl had a deep love of gardening, both for the joy it brought him and the nourishment it provided to others. He maintained a thriving vegetable garden, growing everything from tomatoes to potatoes, and took great pleasure in harvesting fresh food to share with family and friends. Picking vegetables from the garden was one of his favorite pastimes, and a simple way he expressed care and generosity.
In his spare time, Carl could often be found on the golf course at Farm Neck in Oak Bluffs, one of his favorite places to relax and enjoy the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard. Whether playing with friends, family, or simply soaking in the views, golf was a cherished pastime.
Carl will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years, Joyce (Small) Sherr of Sutton; his sons, Gary Sherr and his husband, Andre Campagna, of Boston, and Edward Sherr and his wife, Resa, of Westborough; his daughter, Jennifer Sherr of Boston; and his granddaughters, Rachel Sherr and Rebecca Sherr. He was predeceased by his siblings, Irene (Sherr) Talbot, Renee Sherr, and Harold Sherr.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate team at Visiting Angels for their dedication and care in helping keep Carl comfortable at home.
Family and friends will gather to honor Carl’s remarkable life at his Funeral Service at 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 8th at Temple Emanuel Sinai, 661 Salisbury Street, Worcester. Interment will follow at B’nai Brith Cemetery, 55 St. John’s Road, Worcester. Memorial Observance will be announced. Arrangements are in the care of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Carl’s memory may be made to either the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609 www.jhccenter.org – or the Farm Neck Foundation, P.O. Box 1656, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557 https://www.farmneck.net/fn-foundation.
