Charlie served in the Worcester Public School System over a distinguished 40-year career. After 7 years as a middle school teacher and 6 years as an elementary school assistant principal, he became the principal of various public schools, among them Worcester East Middle School, Chandler Junior High School and Elm Park Elementary School. He received numerous honors, including National Defense Act Grant for the Study of Disadvantaged Children, University of Massachusetts School of Education Award for Local Service to Education, Worcester School Administration Association Award for Service to Education and Mott Foundation Grant for Community Schools.
Charlie held leadership roles in many community organizations, including Jewish Family Agency, Solomon Schechter Day School, Temple Emanuel School Community, Neighborhood Legal Service and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He was an avid reader and contract bridge player; he was a few points short of the level of Silver Life Member. Charlie and Shirley enjoyed gardening and traveling, both in the United States and overseas. Most of all, they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren during their frequent trips to New Jersey.
