Biography
Charles Burack, age 88, died on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was the son of Joseph and Pauline (Klein) Burack.
He leaves his wife of 67 years, Shirley (Sigel) Burack, whom he married on November 2, 1951. It was literally a match made in Heaven; they were inseparable.
Beside his wife, Shirley, he leaves a daughter, Lynda, wife of Robert Novick of West Orange, New Jersey; three granddaughters, Eliana, and her husband Zvi Rantz, Yael and Shoshana; and three great grandchildren, Izzy, Uriah and Liat.
Charlie received his B.S. and Masters of Education from Worcester State College in 1951 and 1952 respectively. In 1977 he received his Doctorate in Education with a specialization in Urban Education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
Charlie served in the Worcester Public School System over a distinguished 40-year career. After 7 years as a middle school teacher and 6 years as an elementary school assistant principal, he became the principal of various public schools, among them Worcester East Middle School, Chandler Junior High School and Elm Park Elementary School. He also taught education and school administration courses at Worcester State College, the University of Massachusetts and Clark University.
He received numerous honors, including National Defense Act Grant for the Study of Disadvantaged Children, University of Massachusetts School of Education Award for Local Service to Education, Worcester School Administration Association Award for Service to Education and Mott Foundation Grant for Community Schools.
Charlie held leadership roles in many community organizations, including Jewish Family Agency, Solomon Schechter Day School, Temple Emanuel School Community, Neighborhood Legal Service and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He was an avid reader and contract bridge player; he was a few points short of the level of Silver Life Member. Charlie and Shirley enjoyed gardening and traveling, both in the United States and overseas. Most of all, they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren during their frequent trips to New Jersey.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 1st in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden under the direction of Richard Perlman. Burial was at Holy Society Cemetery in Leicester.
Memorial Observance will be held through this evening at the residence of Mrs. Dorothy Civin in The Willows, 101 Barry Road, Apartment 1001, Worcester.
