BARRE - Charles Victor Johnson, 93, died peacefully in the Lord on January 16, 2015 at Holden Nursing Home, Holden. He was born in Southworth Mills in 1921. When Quabbin Reservoir was built, his family moved to Hardwick where he spent his childhood. He was a Boy Scout and loved the outdoors.
At an early age he learned harmonica, followed by mandolin and guitar. Charles graduated from Hardwick High School in 1940 and furthered his education at Colonial School of Tool Design. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII. After, he married, he had a family and lived many years in Springfield. Prior to his retirement in 1984, he was employed at the Naval Training Device Center in Orlando as a draftsman and illustrator for 25 years. Charles was a member of the American Legion and participated for several years in the Town of Barre's Memorial Day Ceremonies.
He was married to Marjorie (Bond) Johnson for 43 years who predeceased him. His sister, Margaret (Johnson) Twible also predeceased him as did his granddaughter, Rebekah Stortz. He is survived by his two daughters, Lois Stortz of Fort Meade, FL and Charlene (Steven) Sigel of Worcester; a son, Donald Johnson of Deland, FL; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Charles is best remembered as a quiet, peaceable man who loved God, family, and country, a true 'Singing Cowboy', who enjoyed sharing his musical talents with others. He performed in country western and kitchen bands, sang in a Swedish male choral group and in church choirs. He played his last 'gig' when he was 92 and full of years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to celebrated his life on Sunday, February 22, at 3 p.m. at the Holden Chapel, 279 Reservoir Street (Rte. 31), Holden.
