Charles H. Winslow

RUTLAND/EASTPORT, ME – Charles H. Winslow, 95, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 28, 2013.

His beloved wife of 62 years, Janet V. (Maynard) Winslow passed away in 2010. He leaves two daughters, Barbara Brandes and her husband Alan of Rutland and Karen MacDonald and her husband Gary of Conway, NH; three grandchildren, Alison MacDonald and her husband David Greenberg, Trevor MacDonald and his wife Annica and Amanda Brandes and her fiancé Nicholas; four great-grandchildren, Abigail and Benjamin Greenberg and Leah and Logan MacDonald; two sisters, Lois W. Drowne of Brewster and Jane Wuehrmann of Chapel Hill, NC; several nephews and nieces. A sister, Peggy Woulbroun, predeceased him.

Charles was born in Albany, NY on April 28, 1917 to Paul T. and Ruth (Hawes) Winslow. He lived in Niverville, NY before moving to Newton Highlands. He graduated from Newton High School in 1935 and Stockbridge School of Agriculture in 1940 with a degree in Wildlife Management.

Charles volunteered for service in the army on December 8, 1941. He served with the 94th Infantry Division in Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star. Charles worked for the Department of Conservation, Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a conservation officer, until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland.

Charles enjoyed his gardens, lawn mowing, wildlife, small engine repair, cooking and reading. He and Janet spent many happy summers in Eastport, Maine where they had wonderful friends. His neighbors and friends in Rutland were an important part of his life. He took great joy in his family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildern.

A memorial service for Charles will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4 at the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street. A private committal service will be held at a later date in Rural Cemetery in Rutland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, Mass Audubon, Development Office, 208 South Great Road, Lincoln, MA 01773.
