HOLDEN - Christine Elaine Ahlberg Peterson, 84, of Holden, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully after a life centered on family, kindness, and quiet grace. Born prematurely in Worcester on October 4, 1941, Christine was small from the very beginning, yet she possessed a remarkable inner strength and determination that carried her through every stage of life.

Christine was the beloved daughter of Swedish immigrants Philip Wilhelm Ahlberg and Ulla Andersine Hård Ahlberg. Both of her parents came from Skåne, Sweden, and met after immigrating to Worcester, where they built their life together and raised their family. The traditions, values, and quiet resilience of their Swedish heritage remained an enduring thread throughout Christine’s life.

Christine grew up in Worcester alongside her beloved older brother, Kenneth Ahlberg. The two shared an exceptionally close bond and remained deeply connected throughout their lives. Kenneth was a constant and important presence in Christine’s world until his passing in 2024. After graduating from North High School and attending Becker Junior College, Christine began her career as a secretary at the Norton Company. The job held a special place in her heart, as it was a true family cornerstone—employing her father, her brother, and her father-in-law, Frederic Otis Peterson.

In 1966, Christine married Frederic Parsons Peterson. Together, they shared a life centered on family and community in Massachusetts, spending 47 years on Chapel Street in Holden where they raised their children. During the height of the VHS era, they also owned and operated the Holden House of Video, a neighborhood business fondly remembered by many in the community.

Christine’s warmth extended far beyond her immediate family. For 26 years, she served as a monitor at Wachusett Regional High School, where she became a steady, caring, and protective presence for generations of students. Known for her boundless kindness, words of encouragement, and her famous handmade knitted hats, many students affectionately looked to her as a "stand-in grandmother."

In her later years, Christine found a wonderful sense of community at Old Colony Retirement Homes in Holden. She treasured the friendships she made there and enjoyed the many activities that filled her days. Whether she was playing Hearts or bingo with friends, attending knitting group, cheering on the Red Sox and Patriots, or simply spending time with her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Daisy, Christine embraced each day with warmth and gratitude.

Knitting and crocheting were among her greatest joys. She lovingly created countless hats, blankets, and other handmade gifts, each one a reflection of her generous heart. Her family will treasure these keepsakes for years to come as lasting reminders of her love.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, who meant the world to her: Wendy Peterson Rand and her husband, Steve Rand, of Waterbury, VT; Keith Philip Peterson and his wife, Alison, of Jefferson, MA; and John “Norm” Frederic Peterson and his wife, Marthe, of Waterbury, VT.

She was the adored grandmother to Thayer Peterson (and fiancée Haley Aylward), K. Philip Peterson, Anna Peterson, William Peterson, Jack Peterson, and Lily Peterson; and the cherished great-grandmother to Taylor Peterson. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren, Molly Rand (and partner Ben Hook), Jacob Rand, and Gabe Rand; and step-great-grandson, Nolan Hook.

She also leaves behind her nieces, Lynne Ahlberg Boyd (and her son, Kristopher Dufault) and Ramona Peterson; her nephews, Kevin, Anthony, and Jefferey Clayton; and many extended family members and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her brother's wife, Norma (Gustavson) Ahlberg, and her niece, Kirsten Ahlberg.

Though she stood less than five feet tall, Christine's presence filled every room she entered. She lived with quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and a heart that was always focused on the people she loved. Caring for her family and friends brought her the greatest joy, and she gave that love freely and unconditionally. Her warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit will continue to live on in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
