NORTHBOROUGH - Conrad Herbert Ormsbee passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, in Worcester, MA. He was born on August 19, 1930, in Montpelier, VT to Charles H. Ormsbee and Myrtle (Gadapee) Ormsbee. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Marilyn (Ormsbee) Piro, and his brother Richard Ormsbee.
He leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Anne (McColl) Ormsbee, children Carolyn Ormsbee, Elizabeth (Ormsbee) LaMark, Charles Ormsbee and Stuart Ormsbee, as well as five grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Conrad grew up on a dairy farm in East Montpelier, VT and became known for his trips to Montpelier High School in his old Model T Ford. He attended Vermont Junior College in Montpelier and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War before graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in electrical engineering. He then worked for Green Mountain Power for 32 years.
Conrad actively served numerous roles in the Town of East Montpelier including Selectman, Justice of the Peace, Zoning Board member, and supervisor of the Central VT Solid Waste District. He loved participating as a member of the Four Corners Schoolhouse Association and East Montpelier Historical Society.
He was happiest working in the woods on the family farm with a special fondness for maple sugar season. He was a tinkerer and innovative problem solver who could turn ordinary household items into miraculous solutions in the blink of an eye.
He was pragmatic, a ponderer, an advisor, sharing his wit and wisdom with family and friends. He will be remembered for his knowledge of local history. He was an avid book reader and storyteller. One never knew if a tale took inspiration from stories he read or real-life accounts. He effortlessly regaled listeners with narratives of farm life, family, and automobile escapades.
He became an avid Boston Celtics fan and bocce court strategist later in life. His easy laughter and quiet leadership will be dearly missed.
A graveside service will be held at the Doty Cemetery in East Montpelier in 2027 with exact date and time to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be mailed to the East Montpelier Signpost (PO Box 184, East Montpelier, VT 05651) or the Four Corners Schoolhouse Association (PO Box 63, East Montpelier, VT 05651).
