HOLDEN – Dorothy G. (Gibbs) Smith, 85, of Jefferson, formerly of Fitchburg, passed peacefully at home on Monday, March 11, 2013.
Dorothy was born in Fitchburg, the daughter of William W. and Janet (Hannah) Gibbs and lived in Fitchburg for 48 years. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1945 and was married in 1948. She raised six children before moving to Holden in 1974 and then worked for the Jewish Health Care Center in Worcester for 22 years. Her roles ranged from a nurse's aide, to activities director, to working in medical records.
Dorothy was a kind woman with a warm embrace and a smile at the ready. She took a genuine interest in everyone she met and made sure to acknowledge every kind act, no matter how small, with a thank-you note. She had a thirst for knowledge and was an avid reader, and took pleasure in scenic ocean drives. Her family will remember her for the light in her blue eyes, her selfless demeanor, and her out-of-this world apple pie, fudge and penuche.
She leaves her husband of 65 years, Allen W. Smith; two sons, Larry W. Smith of Athol and Brian F. Smith and his partner Jerry Gelineau of Worcester; a daughter, Patricia L. Smith of Longmont, CO; a brother, William Gibbs of Rutland; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by three sons, Wayne, Curtis and Ronald Smith.
Funeral services for Dorothy are private and will be held at the convenience of the family at Forest Hill Cemetery in Fitchburg. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. To share a memory or offer an online condolence, please sign the guestbook at the bottom of this page.
