Elizabeth "Betty" M. (Barrows) Goodwin

November 30, 1924 — February 24, 2019

WEST BOYLSTON/HOLDEN - Elizabeth "Betty" M. (Barrows) Goodwin, 94, a resident of the Briarwood Continuing Care Retirement Community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Knollwood Nursing Center, West Boylston.

Betty was born in Hartford, CT, on November 30, 1924, one of nine children to Clayton A. and Louise (White) Barrows, and was raised in West Hartford, graduating from William Hall High School. She married the love of her life, Gordon Goodwin, in September 1950, and they made their home in West Hartford, CT., and Holden, MA, spending 26 happy years of retirement in Carolina Shores, NC, before moving to Briarwood in 2010. Gordon passed away in 2012.

Betty was a Barrows and that is a special breed. They are athletic, creative, talented, competitive, smart and feisty. You had to be feisty to survive in a family of 9 children! Betty’s strengths were her artistic and athletic talents. She created many paintings, quilts and needlework that are now treasured memories in the homes of her friends and family. Known as “Grie” to her grandchildren, she made a quilt for each of them that she individually designed. She was also an excellent bowler and golfer, often beating Gordon at both games, of which he was exceedingly proud. She got a hole in one at 73 years old! Betty also loved to play bridge, playing up until weeks before she died. Betty and Gordon loved to travel, first within the US with their children and grandchildren, and then internationally in their retirement years. Betty ziplined in Costa Rica at 76 years old and then celebrated her 80th birthday in Cancun with her immediate family. We all fondly remember wearing turquoise T shirts that said “Betty’s Birthday Bunch” in front of the Chichen Itza pyramid. Betty and Gordon had a loving marriage, always holding hands until the day he died. How Gordon loved it when Betty played the piano and he would sing along.

She leaves her devoted family including two daughters, Amy Elizabeth Weymouth and her husband, Donald of East Falmouth, MA (formerly of Holden) and Laura Goodwin Lynch and her husband, Robert of Southington, CT; a son, Harvey Clayton Goodwin and his wife, Marie of Shawsville, VA; two brothers, John and Daniel Barrows, both of West Hartford; CT, three sisters, Shirley Price of CA, Suzanne Price of Denver, CO and Catherine Bencks of Williamsburg, VA; five grandchildren, Drew Weymouth of Rutland, MA, Elizabeth Dumais of Boylston, MA, Robert Lynch of Lincoln, RI, and James Lynch and William Lynch, both of Southington, CT; 6 great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Robert and Lawrence Barrows and a sister, Patricia Gates, predeceased her.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, CT, where Betty will be laid to rest next to her husband, Gordon.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to staff at Knollwood Nursing Center, Bayberry Lane for their kindness and care to Mom in her declining years. Donations in her memory may be made to Knollwood Nursing Center, 87 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA. 01606.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
