HUBBARDSTON – Albert E. Shaffer, 88, of Barre Road Cut-off, died Saturday, October 25, 2008 in the Wachusett Manor, Gardner.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Theresa (Hoogendyk) Shaffer; a son, Robert W. Shaffer II and his wife Mary of East Templeton; two grandchildren, Valerie and Lynsey Shaffer; several nephews, nieces and cousins. A brother, Robert W. Shaffer, and three sisters, Ruth Doane, Alice Johnson and Helen Choida, predeceased him.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Hubbardston, son of William Jacob and Gertrude (Whitney) Shaffer, and lived in Hubbardston all of his life. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European African Theatre where he was awarded three bronze stars. After the war, he was a machinist for Charles G. Allen Co. in Barre for many years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Gardner Elks Lodge 1426, the George L. Thorng American Legion Post 404 in South Barre, and the Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 30th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be in Rural Glenn Cemetery, 28 Worcester Road (Rte. 68), Hubbardston. Memorial donations may be made to the Hubbardston Public Library, P.O. Box D, Hubbardston, MA 01452.
