Gail Latham Smith

May 5, 1944 — June 3, 2025

BOYLSTON – Gail Latham Smith, age 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late George S. and Mabel (Hanebury) Latham.

Around age 2, Gail’s family emigrated to the United States where they settled in Central Massachusetts. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester, Class of ‘62, soon after she married Richard C. Michalak and started a family. In 1985, she married George W. Smith and lived happily, close to her family and friends.

Gail was a rural postal carrier in the town of Boylston for 26 years. For many years, Gail and George enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Canada with their Airstream trailer and many good friends. After George's passing in 2000, Gail purchased a place on Cape Cod, “her condo” as she would always say, spending time with her friend and fellow Boylstonite, Betty Vadnais. They spent many Cape Cod summers together enjoying life to its fullest!

Whether she was at home tinkering outside in the flower beds, enjoying the pool, doing puzzles, baking, watching her hummingbirds or spending time down on the Cape, Gail would always have her amazing smile on her face. For Gail, her true enjoyment was watching her granddaughters growing up. She was so proud of “her Lyss and Kass”, loving them most of all.

She leaves behind her son, Todd Michalak and his wife, Lori of Boylston; 2 granddaughters, Alyssa Michalak, and Kassandra Michalak, both of Boylston, and her sister, Candy Thoutsis of Dennis, MA. In addition to her parents, Gail is predeceased by her husband, George W. Smith, her brother, William G. Latham, and her daughter, Christine C. Michalak.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Gail’s family from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, June 13th, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. She will be laid to rest next to her late husband at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 14th, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Boylston.
