S Gertrude G. Bauer

WORCESTER - Gertrude G. (Wirths) Bauer, widow of George J. Bauer, died Friday, April 20, 2007 in Sterling Healthcare Center, Sterling. She was born in Woodhaven, New York, daughter of Gertrude H. (Bissiger) and Fred E. Wirths. She lived most of her life in Worcester and most recently at the Briarwood Continuing Care Community.
She leaves two daughters, Georgine Carol, wife of the Reverend Malcolm D. Kilborn of Austin, Texas and Nancy Virginia Thomson, widow of Neil C. Thomson, of West Boylston; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Frederick and Eugene Wirths, and sisters June Chaffee and Faith Yongsma.
Gert was educated in Worcester schools where she later taught for 15 years. After graduating from the former Classical High School, she matriculated to the Worcester State College and received her Bachelor of Science degree.
As a 70-year former member of First Congregational Church in Worcester, she served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Brownie Scout leader, deaconess, trustee and secretary for many years of Concordia Circle and the Women’s Fellowship, and worked on the Senior Lunch Program. In recent years, Gert became a member of the First Congregational Church of West Boylston. She was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teachers’ Association and Retired State, County Municipal Employees Association, the A.A.R.P., and a former member of Eastern Star. Outside the love of her family, Gert’s other interests were painting, handcrafts, antiquing, and gardening.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 28, in the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central Street, followed by a luncheon at the church where the family will greet friends. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, Music Fund, 26 Central Street, West Boylston, MA 01583; or the First Congregational Church of Worcester, Memorial Fund, 1070 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA 01602.
