George Carlson, 91, passed away peacefully after a short period of declining health with his wife of 69 years by his side.
He is survived by his wife Janice, brother Ronald Carlson of Oakham, MA, children (Ret) Lt. Col Gary Carlson (Kim) of California, Nancy Oldakowski (Eddie) of Paxton, MA, and David Carlson (Deb) of Sturbridge, MA, Grandchildren Christopher Oldakowski, Nikki Oldakowski Sciannella (Stephen), Michael Carlson (Stevie), Brad Carlson (Heather) Matt Carlson (Taylor), Lizzy Carlson, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ninety-one years ago, George was born in Paxton to George G. Carlson and Sophie (Lupa) Carlson on December 28, 1933. He continued to reside in Paxton for his entire life.
After graduating from WPI with a degree in civil engineering, George enlisted in the US Navy. With his new bride Janice by his side, it was off to pilot training school in Florida. As a Navy pilot, he flew off of the carrier, The Independence.
George returned to Paxton to build his own home, raise his family and start a career as a civil engineer working for many years for EJ Cross, followed by a second career at Wolfe New England as a cost consultant. In his free time, he earned an MBA from Clark University.
Flying was a passion for George. A highlight of his life was owning a small single engine plane that flew out of Spencer Airport. A day date trip for George and Jan would be flying to another airport for lunch and back.
A talented musician, George could play just about any instrument placed in his hands, his favorite being the accordion. For the past several years you have often found him playing at Finn Park in Rutland for weekend dances.
For enjoyment, George played softball. He was a member of the Worcester Senior Softball League for over 30 years, his last out being October 1, 2024. He enjoyed the athleticism, competition and camaraderie of the men and women that played in the league. To view George in action, search for the YouTube video “90-year-old makes circus catch.”
Above all, George was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all who loved him.
