RUTLAND – George A. Johnson, Sr., 78, beloved husband of Gail R. (Haines) Johnson, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Born in Worcester and raised in Boylston, he was the son of the late Robert and Ruth (Durgin) Johnson.
George was a graduate of Tahanto Regional High School and an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, proudly attaining the highest honor, The Eagle Scout rank. George went on to enlist in the United States Navy and proudly served his country. Upon his return, he began a long career with the Department of Public Works in both Rutland and Paxton, retiring in 2003 as Water Superintendent. George was a proud and dedicated Freemason. George also served his community and was Commander of the American Legion Post 310.
George could often be found working on the family farm and took pride in his vegetable garden. He was always active and, on the go, and especially enjoyed traveling and cruising with Gail.
Above all else, George cherished the time spent with family.
He will be lovingly missed and remembered by his son, George A. Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Nichole of Rutland; his daughter, Juliane Dvoskin and her husband, Mike of Rutland; four brothers, Robert Johnson and his wife Sandy of Boylston, Jeffrey Johnson of FL, Eric Johnson and his wife Denise of Boylston and Paul Johnson and his wife, Lisa of Boylston; three sisters, Carol Goulet and her husband, James of Boylston, Ellen Schremser and her husband, Dennis of Dudley and Susan Forbes of Boylston; his grandchildren including Tyler Anderson and his wife, Micaela, Aidan Anderson, Preston Anderson, Ella Johnson and Luca Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers that helped care for George over the past few years.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20 in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21 in the funeral home. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. www.milesfuneralhome.com
