George P. Luddy

HOLDEN - George Patrick Luddy passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026, at Rose Monahan Hospice Home. He was 84 years old.

Born on July 24, 1942, George was the eldest child of George R. and Catherine (Lonergan) Luddy. He grew up in Whitman, Massachusetts, attended Holy Family School and, in fourth grade, met his future wife, Charlena "Char" Fitzmaurice. Their lifelong partnership became one of the great joys and foundations of his life.

George attended Tabor Academy before earning a degree in Marine Engineering from Maine Maritime Academy. Following graduation, he joined Farrell Lines, beginning a career that took him across the globe. His work often brought him to Africa and other distant ports, where months spent at sea fostered a lifelong sense of adventure, curiosity, and appreciation for people from all walks of life.

After leaving Farrell Lines, George joined Chevrolet Motor Division in Westwood, Massachusetts, as a Service and District Manager. In 1978, he purchased an automobile dealership in Holden, Massachusetts, establishing George Luddy Chevrolet. What began as a business became a true family enterprise when all three of his sons eventually joined him there, working alongside him and helping build the dealership into a respected organization. George took immense pride not only in the business he created but in the opportunity to share that journey with his family.

George served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts State Automobile Dealers’ Association for sixteen years, including four terms as President. He also represented Chevrolet dealers on both the Northeast Region Chevrolet Dealer Council and the Chevrolet National Dealer Council, ultimately serving as National

Council President for two years. Throughout his career, George earned a reputation for fairness, integrity, and thoughtful leadership, and he was respected by colleagues throughout the country.

While George was proud of his professional achievements, nothing compared to the love he felt for his family. He is survived by his wife, Char; his sons Ryan (Rosemary) and Sean (Jill), daughter-in-law Mary-Isabel; his brother, Robert Luddy, and nephews Michael and Matthew; his sisters, Mary Ann Luddy and Patricia Luddy Newbitt, and nieces Caitlin Newbitt Ricciarelli and Cara Newbitt Provincial. He was predeceased by his eldest son, James "Jay" Luddy and his brother-in-law David Newbitt.

George's greatest joy was his eight grandchildren: Anna Catherine, Marcus, Andrew, Ruthie, RJ, Ree (Rosemary), Tristan, and Colin. He had great pride in their accomplishments, treasured every moment spent with them, and found endless happiness in watching them grow. His love, encouragement, and example will remain with them always.

Anyone who knew George knew that he never met a stranger. Warm, outgoing, and genuinely interested in others, he had a rare gift for making people feel welcome. whether through a conversation, a shared laugh, or an act of kindness, George had a way of turning acquaintances into friends and friends into family.

George's legacy is found not only in the business he built or the leadership positions he held, but in the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, trusted friend, respected businessman, and generous soul whose warmth made the world a better place. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

In his final years, George was warmly cared for at St. Francis Day Health, where he formed close bonds with the staff who became like family to him. Their kindness and companionship brought him great comfort.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 5, 2026 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson, MA.
