WORCESTER - Hannah Karp Laipson, 93, died on Thursday, February 14 at the Jewish Healthcare Center. She was born on April 27, 1925, the only child of Edward Baruch Karp and Inda Kelce Karp. She graduated from Colby College, Phi Beta Kappa and earned her master’s degree at Assumption College. She was a retired English teacher, community volunteer, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her husband, Myron Laipson, died in November 2016, shortly after their 70th wedding anniversary.
Hannah taught at Assumption College and for many years at Quinsigamond Community College. She was involved in many community activities and served as the President of WISE (Worcester Institute for Senior Education) and Chair of the Board of Common Cause of Massachusetts. She served as a Co-President of the Worcester Section of the National Council of Jewish Women and was on the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service. She was awarded the Mary E. Tobin Award by the MA Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors in 1990 and the Distinguished Service Award by Common Cause, MA.
She leaves her children, Deborah Payne, Ellen Laipson (Henri Barkey) and Adam Laipson (Erin Williams), her grandchildren, Jonathan Payne (Ellen), Sam Payne, Eli Laipson-Williams, and Maya Barkey, and her great-grandchildren Oliver Payne and Tessa Payne.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 11:00 AM ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17 IN TEMPLE EMANUEL SINAI, 661 SALISBURY ST., WORCESTER, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME OF HOLDEN. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.
Memorial Observance will be announced at the time of the funeral service.
