WORCESTER - Howard Lockwood, a modest, quiet man who was the tower of strength for his family, passed away on April 28, 2019 at the age of nearly 96.
He was a life-long Worcester resident, the son of Frances (Davidson) Lockwood and Simon Lockwood. He was educated in the Worcester Public Schools, graduating from the former Classical High School. He received a B.S. in Physics from M.I.T. after serving twenty-two months in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his graduation, he worked as a physicist until changing careers when he passed the CPA exams and spent his adult life as an accountant.
He was active in community affairs in addition to his lifelong commitment to the Worcester Jewish community.
Howard represented the third generation of his family to participate and contribute to the growth of Temple Emanuel where he was elected a lifetime member of the Board of Directors. This commitment continued to Temple Emanuel Sinai.
Howard was an active representative for Israel Bonds and served for several years as president of the Worcester District of the Zionist Organization of America. Most important, he was the family pillar for Thelma, his wife of seventy-two years; his daughters Gay Lockwood, Marsha Cramer and her husband, Michael, and Susan Lockwood; his grandchildren, Melanie Cramer and Matthew Cramer and his wife, Kaylee; and his great-grandchildren April Cryan and Logan Cramer. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Shirley Lockwood Simpson and Joan Lockwood Watnick. A genuine "go-to" man for comfort, counsel and practical help, he will be missed by a world of caring family and friends.
