STERLING - James Donald Emerton, age 64, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Born in Watertown, New York on June 17th 1961, he was the son of Dr. Donald E. Emerton (Sackets Harbor, NY) and Jeanne Olivier Emerton (New Bedford, MA). He attended local schools and graduated from Watertown High School in 1979 and St. Lawrence University in 1983 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. After college he returned to Watertown and worked for Creg Systems in information technology for a few years before moving to Massachusetts to work for Eaton Publishing where he published a biotechnology journal. He rose to the rank of Vice President before leaving the company to pursue other interests.
In 2009, he started working for the Sterling Fire Department as a volunteer on the Citizens Emergency Response Team. This was the beginning of a passionate and dedicated career in public safety. After learning the needs of the local first responders, he became an EMT, a paramedic, and then a firefighter. He graduated from the Fire Academy at the top of his class at age 50. He was an American Heart Association instructor for First Aid and CPR classes. He was a leading member of the Critical Incident Debriefing Team, which provides support for first responders experiencing occupational trauma.
He will be long remembered for his selfless care and compassion for others. His greatest honor was tending to members of the community when they needed it the most. He was known for providing simple acts of kindness and comfort such as holding the hand of an ailing patient or asking them about their garden. His humble, kind, and gentle gestures made a lasting impact on so many people.
He married the love of his life, Christine Venier, in 2001 on Martha’s Vineyard. They cherished and supported each other for 30 years, sharing laughter every day. The simple joys of life like preparing a delicious meal, going for a snowshoe hike in the forest out back, or watching sunsets from the deck were how they enjoyed their time together.
Jim was an avid bird watcher and would spend his afternoons off duty at the Barre Dam watching the hawk migrations, earning him the nickname “Bird Nerd.” His sense of humor was legendary at the fire station, and he loved to dress in silly costumes for a laugh. He would swap gag gifts with his sister-in-law, Annie, much to her delight. He loved and treasured his nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, including his biological mother, Dorothy Austin. James is survived by his wife, Christine, sister Mary D. (Rockville Center, NY), brother Dr. Jon A. and wife Jerrie-Lynn, nieces Isabelle and Sophia (Watertown, NY), sister in law and brother in law, Annie and Patrick Dowling and niece Maeve (Kittery, Maine.)brother in law Jeff and partner Lisa(California) and brother in law and sister in law Jonathan and Amy Venier and nephew and niece Jamie and Nola (California).
