James Joy

STERLING – James Joy, 92, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving nieces, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Born in Worcester and raised in Sterling, James was the son of the late Frederick E. and Mamie (Ashe) Joy. He attended Sterling public schools and was a graduate of Leominster Vocational High School.

Following high school, James began his career as a Terminal Operator for Shell Oil Corporation. After many years of dedicated service, he retired from Shell, but retirement did not last long. James returned to the workforce as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Sterling, a position he truly enjoyed.

In 1961, James met Sandra Cooper. The two began dating and, after 30 years of love and devotion, were married in 1991. Together, they settled in Sterling and shared many wonderful years filled with love, laughter, travel, and countless cherished memories.

James had many passions throughout his life. He loved motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidsons, and took great pride in his cherished Maltipoo, Penny. He enjoyed gardening and was especially proud of the magnificent gladiolas he grew. James also loved watching cooking shows, often learning new recipes to prepare for Sandra. Japanese food was a particular favorite of theirs, and they especially enjoyed their many visits to Shiro Japanese Restaurant in Berlin, where they became like family. Their love of Japanese cuisine and culture even led them to travel to Japan together.

James will be remembered for his incredible wit, unforgettable smile, and contagious laugh. He was an amazing neighbor, a beloved uncle, and a dear friend to countless people. His kindness, humor, and warm presence touched the lives of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.

James is survived by his nieces, Tammy Rajaniemi of Townsend and Ronna Rajaniemi of New Hampshire; his stepson, Andrew Blake of Florida; his stepdaughters, Amanda Roy of Sterling and Candace Plummer of Florida; as well as countless beloved friends. Besides his wife, Sandra, James was predeceased by his sister, Ruth (Joy) Rajaniemi.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Muriel Christnen, who lovingly cared for James during the last nine months of his life. Her time, compassion, and devoted attention were invaluable, and Jim was deeply grateful for all she did for him.

In accordance with James’s wishes, all services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James’s name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
