Jeanne L. (Slaney) Hughes

PAXTON – Jeanne L. (Slaney) Hughes, 90, of Pleasant Street, a resident of Paxton for over 50 years, died in her home on Sunday, October 15, 2006, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 65 years, Frederick J. Hughes; twin sons, James Hughes of Paxton and Thomas Hughes and his wife Dianne of Oakham; two grandchildren, Scott Hughes and his wife Karen of Princeton and Deborah Baldwin and her husband Erik of Oakham; many nephews and nieces. An infant son, Thomas, and two brothers and five sisters, predeceased her. She was born in St. Pierre, Miquelon, France, daughter of Pierre and Denah (Barnes) Slaney. She came to Worcester as an infant and was educated at Holy Name Grammar and High School.

Mrs. Hughes worked at the Worcester Registry of Motor and was a summer resident of Millcove, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was a founding member of St. Columba Church in Paxton. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and caring mother, whose first thought was always for the comfort of her family and friends.

The funeral for Mrs. Hughes will be held on Wednesday, October 18, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden with a Mass at 12 noon in St. Columba’s Church, 18 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Umass Memorial Hospice, P.O. Box 2795, Worcester, MA 01613-9938.
