John M. Graves

January 9, 1926 — March 10, 2014

Princeton - John M. Graves, 88, of Leominster Rd., passed peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2014 under the loving care of his family and the staff at the Highlands in Fitchburg. He was born in Southbridge, the son of John H. and Ethel (Bliss) Graves.

John graduated from Princeton High School and attended Worcester Junior College. He owned and operated John M. Graves Insurance Agency in Princeton as well as Barron Adams Insurance Agency in Westminster. John proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Asiatic Pacific Theatre.

He was devoted to his faith and was a former treasurer and trustee of the First Congregational Church of Princeton. Active in Masonry, John was a member of the Hope Lodge of Masons in Gardner, Ivanhoe Commandery, #46 Knights Templar, Gardner Royal Arch Chapter, Gardner Shrine Club, and the past president of the Gardner Masonic Charities. He was also a member of the Square and Compass Club of Westminster, Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington and The National Dairy Shrine, Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post # 189 in Sterling and a past commander of the former Princeton American Legion Post. John was a 27-year volunteer firefighter for the Town of Princeton Fire Department and chairman of the Insurance Commission in Princeton.

His beloved wife of 28 years, MaryAnn F. ( Moroski) Graves, died in 1981. John leaves behind a brother and a sister; many nephews and nieces; grandnephews and grandnieces. Though he never re-married, he leaves behind his longtime companion, Beulah Kilgore of Maine, her children and grandchildren.

John spent his recreational time hunting, fishing and bird watching. He loved nature, animals and always had a beautiful garden.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather and visit with John's family from 11 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd. Sterling, followed by a funeral service to honor his life at 1 p.m. Interment will be held privately in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Princeton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's name to the First Congregational Church of Princeton, 14 Mountain Rd., Princeton MA 01541.
