Jefferson - Karen L. Horrigan, a long-time and proud resident of Holden, Massachusetts, passed away on October 5, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and friendship.

Karen was born on September 20, 1938, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to George and Theresa (Scotti) Andersen. She grew up in Worcester and Shrewsbury. She was a graduate of Major Howard Beal High School in Shrewsbury and attended Becker Junior College.

On September 10, 1960, Karen married Robert “Bob” Horrigan. Together, they built a life centered around their family and community. Bob passed away on July 27, 2014, and Karen carried his memory with her throughout the years.

Karen’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother to her son, Stephen Horrigan, and his wife, Michelle, of Jefferson, and her daughter, Nancy Heppenstall, and her husband, Ron, of Rutland. She cherished her grandchildren, Katie Horne and her husband, Kevin; William Horrigan; and Avery Heppenstall. She leaves behind her loving sister, Priscilla Benson and her husband, Roy, of Shrewsbury, as well as her brother-in-law Richard Horrigan and his wife, Carolann of New Hampshire, formerly of Holden.

Karen’s family extended far beyond her immediate household. She will be remembered by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as four great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in her heart. She will also be missed by her “grand dogs,” whom she loved to spoil with treats.

Karen devoted many years creating a warm and loving home, raising her children and welcoming all their friends. Later, she returned to the workforce, joining Pepsi-Cola in Holden. She remained a dedicated employee for many years before retiring in 2002.

Karen was involved in her community and generously gave her time and talents to many organizations and causes. She served as Treasurer of the Holden Housing Authority for 14 years and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden. She also turned her love of yard sales into a small business called Possession Placers with her good friend, Judy.

Throughout her life, Karen was always willing to volunteer and help others. She served on the Holden District Hospital Auxiliary, where she was responsible for training students for the Candy Striper Program. She was a Brownie Leader and Town Girl Scout Cookie Chairman, a board member of the Worcester Pee Wee Hockey League, a softball coach for the Holden Girls’ Softball League, and a cheerleading coach for the Wachusett Church Basketball League. She was also an active PTA member at Dawson School in Holden.

Family was at the center of Karen’s world, and she never missed an opportunity to be there for her children and grandchildren. Whether it was a sporting event, school activity, performance, or any other special occasion, she was always in the stands, cheering them on and showing her support. Her presence meant so much to her family, and she took great pride in being there for every milestone, both big and small.

Karen was also known for her incredible generosity. She gave freely of her time, her kindness, and whatever she could do to help others. She had a way of making people feel as though they belonged with her warm heart and welcoming spirit.

Above all, Karen will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and the Holden community.
