Keith Vernon Whitcher

July 24, 1937 — May 18, 2013

OAKHAM/RUTLAND – Keith V. Whitcher Sr., 75, formerly a 20 year resident of Rutland, died peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in West Boylston. Mr. Whitcher was born in Holden on July 24, 1937, the son of Vernon A. and Viola H. (Benoit) Whitcher.



Mr. Whitcher graduated from the Worcester Boy’s Trade High School with the class of 1957. He began his career in the Auto industry as a Mechanic. Mr. Whitcher worked for Sunnyside Ford in Holden, Sears Auto and retired from the Federated Auto Parts Company in 2010. He was a Captain on the Rutland Fire Department, retiring in 1990 after serving for 25 years. While living in Rutland Mr. Whitcher was also an active member of the Rutland Fire Brigade and played a key role in the organization of many of their fundraisers. He was quite proud of the town’s antique Fire Engine and was known for being one of the few people that knew how to operate it. Mr. Whitcher was a member of the Oakham Congregational Church where he will be dearly missed. He enjoyed snowmobiles, fast cars, and working outside in his garden.



He is survived by his son, Keith Whitcher Jr. of Rutland; three daughters, Linda Jean LaCasse of N.H., Karen Ann Gates of Princeton and Deborah Lee Cyr of Spencer; his devoted long-time girlfriend and caretaker, Shirley Roman of Holden; two close cousins Jean Phelps of CA and Paula Hughes of FL; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.



Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at the Oakham Congregational Church, 4 Coldbrook Rd., Oakham. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 128 Providence St., Worcester, MA 01604 or to Rutland Fire Brigade Rescue Fund, 240 Main St., Rutland, MA 01543.
