HOLDEN/BROOKFIELD - Louise G. (Smith) Swenson of Brookfield died October 17, 2007 in the Odd Fellows Home in Worcester following a battle with liver cancer. She leaves her husband, Rodney, a son Thomas in Leominster, a son David in Rutland, a sister Betty Forss in Limmington, Maine, a granddaughter Kristin Milton in Leominster and a grandson Craig Swenson in Boylston, Her daughter Sally Swenson died in 1995. She was loved by her daughters-in-law, Wendy (Milne) Swenson and Becky (Nurmi) Swenson.
Louise and Rod married in June, 1959. They lived in Holden for 35 years before moving to Brookfield in 2002. Louise was born March 12, 1941 in Cambridge to Gladys (Weymouth) and William Smith. She graduated St. Mary’s High School in Cambridge and received an Associates of Science from Quinsigamond Community College. She worked with handicapped children as an occupational therapist for the FLLAC collaborative in several Northern Worcester County communities before retiring in 1995. During her retirement she continued working part-time with handicapped children as a school bus monitor for R.L. McCarthy & Son, Inc., often working alongside her husband, who drives for the bus company. Louise was a skilled crafter. She was especially gifted in sewing and other textile related crafts. She attended the Elsa Williams School in Townsend. She worked for a time as an instructor and sales clerk at Shirley’s Sewing Center in West Boylston.
Together with her husband, she operated Kissabull Kennels, breeders and exhibitors of English bulldogs. The couple competed in regional and national shows, finishing several champions. She received an Award of Merit for sportsmanship from the American Kennel Club. She was active in the Bulldog Club of New England and a member of the Bulldog Club of America and the American Kennel Club.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 19, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Louise will be held on Saturday from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, Holden.
