STERLING — Marjorie I. (Reed) Long, 90, beloved wife of Albert J. Long, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus.
Born and raised in Craftsbury, Vermont, Marjorie was the daughter of the late Homer and Olive Reed. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Vermont, where she earned her certification in Dental Hygiene. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a dental hygienist, working for Dr. Gosselin in Worcester for many years.
Faith and family were the center of Marjorie’s life. Known lovingly to many as “Mimi,” she was a devoted member of The First Church in Sterling and a true pillar of both the church and the community. She lived a life marked by grace, kindness, creativity, and unwavering dedication to those she loved.
Marjorie gave generously of her time through countless volunteer activities and committees. She especially cherished her work with the church’s Flower Committee, where she found great joy in delivering flowers to homebound members following worship services. Each Christmas season, she poured her heart and artistic gifts into creating the church’s beautiful poinsettia displays, leaving a lasting touch of beauty for all who entered the sanctuary.
A gifted artist and craftswoman, Marjorie had a passion for sewing, baking, gardening, and creating handmade treasures. Through the 4-H program, she inspired young people by sharing her love of sewing and craftsmanship. She also volunteered by reading to children at the local elementary school and co-owned the Old Glory Craft Shop in Northborough, where she and her partner sold the handmade creations she so lovingly made. She was a familiar and beloved presence at The First Church fairs and community events, where her crafts were always eagerly anticipated.
Marjorie and her husband, Al, were deeply involved in the church’s Youth Fellowship program, accompanying generations of young people on memorable trips and adventures. She also played an integral role in the committee that oversaw renovations to The First Church in Sterling, helping shape the place that meant so much to her.
She treasured her lifelong friendships, especially those shared through her monthly bridge group. Together, they traveled the world, creating memories in places like Paris and throughout France. Marjorie approached life with joy, curiosity, and adventure, always leaving the world a little more beautiful than she found it. Her gentle spirit and generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Marjorie is survived by her devoted husband, Albert J. Long, with whom she would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 6; her daughter, Michele Long-Albino; her grandchildren, Christopher Chaffee, Jessica Giumentaro and her husband Daniel Giumentaro, Mishka Long and her husband Jeff Plikunas, Nicolas Albino, and Miles Long; her great-grandchildren, Anthony and Kaylee Giumentaro and Sammy Plikunas; along with several great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Brian Long; her daughter, Roxanne Prino; and her brothers, David, Alan, and Donald Reed.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral & Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, at The First Church in Sterling, 6 Meetinghouse Hill Road, Sterling.
