RUTLAND/HAVERHILL – Matilda “Tillie”A. (Martelli) Haney, 94, formerly of Rutland, died peacefully at Holy Family Hospital at Merrimack Valley in Haverhill on Sunday, May 17, 2015. She was born in Rutland, the daughter of Lorenzo and Josephine (Nagri) Martelli, and lived and worked in Rutland for most of her life, until moving to Haverhill 15 years ago.
Tillie was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Thomas N. Haney in 1991. She is survived by her sons, Thomas Haney and his wife, Sue of Hyde Park, VT and Stephen Haney of Chatham, NH; her daughters, Josephine Dupal and her husband, Jack of Lisbon, ME and Rita Quist and her husband, Gerald of Rutland; her grandchildren, Stephanie Dupal and her husband, Stu Smith , Stacey Skerry and her husband, Churck, Erica Skerry and her husband, Noel, Kendra Slack and her husband, John, Leanne DiSanto, Todd Houle and his wife, Janice, Timothy Houle and Denise Houle; great-grandchildren, Kristen, Karl, Kyle, Hannah, Avery, Alex, Sage and Francesca. She leaves her long-time companion, Thomas Bowles of Haverhill with whom she lived, and his children, Thomas Bowles Jr., David Bowles, and Carol Sanford. Tillie was also predeceased by her daughter, Jayne, and her grandson, Thomas.
Tillie retired from Rutland Heights Hospital after 36 years of service. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland and it’s Monday Club, the Rutland Historical Society and the Rutland Council on Aging. Tillie loved gardening and cooking for her family and friends. Those who knew her believed she was happiest when surrounded by her family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial service for Tillie at 11 am on Thursday, May 21 at the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street. Burial will be private at a later date in Rural Cemetery, Rutland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543 or to the Anne-Marie Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 56, Barre, MA 01005. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
