HOLDEN / FALL RIVER – Matthew E. Dec, 96, of Colony Retirement Homes, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2013 at Autumn Village in Worcester after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 70 years, Loretta A. (Zmuda) Dec; a son, Robert M. Dec and his wife Suzanne of Holden; a brother, George Dec of Silver Springs, MD; two granddaughters, Melanie and Stefanie Dec both of New York City; and several nephews and nieces.
Matthew was born in Fall River, the son of Polish immigrants, Mateuz and Josephine (Skrzypiec) Dec and lived most of his life in Fall River before moving to Holden eight years ago. He graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School and was a veteran of World War II. He was an Army Technician serving with Medical Detachment Company C 120th Medical Battalion in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. Matthew owned and operated Loretta’s Variety Store in Fall River with his wife for 31 years retiring in 1983. Previously, he owned San-Dec Bar and Grill in Fall River. He was a member of St. George’s Church. He enjoyed gardening and was a huge Red Sox fan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Funeral services for Matthew will be held on Monday, March 18, from the funeral home with a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. A committal service will be held on Thursday at Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
