HUBBARDSTON, MA/KAGEL CANYON, CA – Michael Anthony Cappuccio, Jr., 74, formerly of Hubbardston, MA, passed away unexpectedly in Arizona on Saturday, May 23, 2026. Born in Holden and raised in Hubbardston, Michael was the beloved son of Michael A. and Mary P. (Nee) Cappuccio.
Following his graduation from Tufts University, Michael took his adventurous spirit westward. A true free spirit, he spent much of his life exploring the western United States, embracing the natural beauty and peaceful lifestyle he cherished.
Michael found inspiration, peace, and joy in the mountains, deserts, forests, and wide-open spaces. Throughout his life, he was blessed with many friendships, but his most faithful companions were his beloved four-legged friends. Mademoiselle, and later Sonora for the past ten years, shared countless adventures by his side and held a special place in his heart.
Along life's journey Michael held a number of jobs, always valuing experiences over possessions and the simple pleasures that life had to offer. Bird watching was a favorite hobby. As a writer he shared his keen observations, thoughtful reflections and appreciation for the world around him.
Gentle, kind, caring, intelligent and unassuming by nature, Michael possessed a quiet warmth that endeared him to those who knew him.
He found peace and happiness in nature, treasured his independence and lived life on his own terms. Family and friends will also remember his sense of humor and creativity.
Michael is survived by three sisters, Mary L. Hagstrom, Elda C. Mahoney and Nancy M. Hurley and her husband, Michael; sister-in-law Joan Cappuccio; nephew Kurt J. Hagstrom; niece Lily M. Cappuccio; aunts, uncles, and cousins. Besides his parents, Michael is predeceased by his brother, James C. Cappuccio; and two brothers in law, Conrad Hagstrom and Richard Mahoney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, at St. Patrick's Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Hubbardston.
