STERLING - Michael X. Mongeau, 66, passed away on May 3, 2026, after a courageous 10 month battle with glioblastoma brain cancer.
Born in Oakland CA, Michael was the 4th of 7 children, raised by Laurent and Margaret (Radzik) Mongeau. He was raised in Webster MA and graduated high school in 1977 from Marianhill Central Catholic High School in Southbridge MA. He attended college at the University of New England in Biddeford ME, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology in 1981. He later returned to school and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Clark University in Worcester, which led to a lifelong career in Information Technology. He worked for two companies in his lifetime: Raytheon Corporation and Stratus Computer, initially as an IT Operations specialist and later as a web applications developer.
A lifelong sports and fitness enthusiast, Michael always kept active and enjoyed hiking, running, cycling, triathlons, golf, tennis, and most recently pickleball with friends in Sterling. Some of his favorite outdoor activities were sunning on New England and Florida beaches as well as taking long hikes on the Central MA Rail Trail. Michael was an avid learner and reader. He enjoyed completing word and logic puzzles, as well as jig-saw puzzles with family. He also enjoyed playing guitar and listening to all forms of music from jazz to folk to classic rock-and-roll.
Michael was a quiet-spoken, intelligent, curious man who lived his life with compassion and kindness. He was a guiding light for so many people, working tireless to support those around him with a gentle, loving heart. He approached every obstacle with admirable strength and positivity. Everyone who encountered Michael both professionally and personally were better for having met him. Those who came to know and care for Michael were left with the knowledge that he was truly a good man. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Michael is survived by his best friend and wife of 33 years, Dawnel L. (Vaughn) Mongeau, and daughters Claire Mongeau of Newmarket, NH and Nicole Mongeau of Sterling, MA, as well as siblings Kathryn Mongeau of Sacramento, CA, Marie Mongeau of Putnam, CT, Annie (David) Stuehr of Westwood, MA, and Laurence Mongeau of Byfield, MA.
