SHREWSBURY - Muriel Tucker, age 98, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, surrounded by her daughter and close friends who loved her like family.
Born on September 28, 1927, in Newark, New Jersey, she spent most of her life in New Jersey before moving to Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in 2020 to live with her daughter. She remained independent in her Springfield NJ home until age 92.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Murray Tucker, her neighbor, whom she met at age 16 and married in 1947. Their marriage was rooted in loyalty, respect and devotion.
She is survived by her daughters, Roberta Tucker and Imal Wagner; her grandsons, Alex Wagner (fiancée Ana) and Max Wagner (Melodie), who brought her tremendous pride and joy; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Korben and Perry Wagner, whose lives delighted her and kept her smiling in her later years.
Muriel was also predeceased by her dear friend Sophie Schartz; Shelley “Tesi” Holt, who from Roberta’s seventh-grade years became like a daughter to her; and Roberta’s beloved partner, Robby, who lovingly called her “Mumsy.”
To her daughters, she was an anchor. In her seventies, she drove through a snowstorm to be beside Roberta in the hospital and then slept beside her in the emergency room and in a chair after she was admitted. When Imal faced a family health crisis while living in Iowa, Muriel boarded a plane without hesitation to stand by her side. Her motherhood was steady, protective, and unwavering.
She was known for her kindness, sharp mind, and immaculate home. She somehow always knew the answers during games of Trivial Pursuit and had a fondness for late-night Japanese horror movies while ironing. She was practical, loving, and quietly strong.
In her later years, she formed deeply meaningful bonds beyond blood. Michelle Porter became like another daughter to her and, through unwavering devotion, helped Muriel remain independently in her home until age 92. Even after Muriel moved to Massachusetts, she travelled whenever something happened — an illness, a need, a birthday — Michelle came and stayed closely connected to Muriel every day by phone. Andrea Bailey and Liz Fenna also became like family, offering consistent kindness and support. Their love meant more than words can express.
Above all, Muriel built an ever-widening circle of connections that spanned generations. She welcomed others in and made them feel they belonged. The enduring relationships she created are her lasting testament — a reflection of the generous and deeply loving woman she was.
Simply, she adored and loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and adopted family with unconditional love. Always with a smile and open arms, she had a gentle, kind, and loving heart. We will miss and love her forever.
The gravesite burial service for family members and friends will take place on Thursday, February 26, at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge NJ. next to her beloved husband Murray. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association.
