Conway, SC/Sterling, MA – Paul A. Montagna passed away peacefully at Conway Medical Center, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, after battling pancreatic cancer. Paul is the loving husband of Andra (Browchuk) Montagna.
Born in Westfield MA, Paul is the son of the late Alfred and Helen (Carney) Montagna. Paul grew up in Sterling and attended Wachusett High School, graduating in 1973. Paul met his future wife, Andra, through mutual friends. The two of them started dating about a year later and fell in love. In the year 1979, Paul and Andra were married.
After high school Paul went directly into the workforce. He began his career as a lineman, working for the phone company which eventually became Verizon. He worked his way through the ranks and retired in a management position.
Throughout his life Paul was always meticulous. He was meticulous about keeping his cars clean, and his lawn tidy. He enjoyed working outside, whether mowing the grass, or snow blowing in the winter.
Paul had a lifelong love of sports, especially hockey, baseball, and golf. He played hockey from his high school years well into adulthood, competing for many years in local men's leagues. An avid golfer, Paul looked forward to every opportunity to get out on the course, enjoying both the competition and camaraderie that came with the game. Whether playing a round with friends, talking about the latest tournament, or working to improve his game, golf remained one of his favorite pastimes throughout his life.
His passion for sports extended beyond his own participation. He generously volunteered his time coaching youth baseball, proudly coaching his younger brothers, Mark and John, from Little League through the Babe Ruth League. Years later, he continued that tradition by coaching his son Michael's teams, sharing his love of the game, and helping shape the experiences of countless young players. Whether playing, coaching, or cheering from the sidelines, Paul found great joy in sports and the friendships and memories they created.
Later in life, Paul and Andra relocated to Conway, South Carolina, where they spent the last fourteen years together. Drawn by the warm weather, easy access to golf, and proximity to the beach, Conway was the perfect place for Paul to enjoy retirement. A sports fan, he also loved being close to the excitement of college athletics, and rarely missed an opportunity to follow his favorite teams. Whether spending a day on the golf course, taking walks along the beach with Andra, or watching a game, Paul embraced and enjoyed the lifestyle that coastal South Carolina had to offer.
Paul will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Andra. Paul also leaves behind his brother, John Montagna of Sterling, and his children; Michael and Erika Montagna of Shrewsbury, Kaitlyn Montagna of Leominster, and Elizabeth and Sean Paradise of Gardner. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Seth and Kyle Paradise, and Maddie and Ellie Montagna. Paul was predeceased by his brother Mark Montagna.
Private interment services will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling, Massachusetts. Memorial calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Miles Sterling Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling, MA 01564.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Project Purple, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting patients, raising awareness, and educating the world about pancreatic cancer.
