RUTLAND – Joseph Power Murphy, died at home on Friday, March 19, 2010 surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Joan M. (Budnick) Murphy; three daughters, Tara Lynch and her husband Robert of Barre, Kathleen Murphy and Joanne Johnson and her husband Stephan, all of Cambridge; a son, Stephen Murphy and his wife MaryAnne of Wilmington; a brother, Paul Murphy of Wellesley; a sister, Anne Carr of North Chelmsford; 13 grandchildren, Rory and his wife Bethany, Jaclyn, Casey, Caitlin, Kyle, Fallon, Ryan, Stephany and her husband Timothy, Murphy, Mallory, Ceara, Gannon and his grandson, Griffin whom he spent many special moments with ; 3 great-granddaughters, Leah, Jazminn and Molli; and several nieces and nephews. A son, Timothy Murphy died in 2002. He is predeceased by two sisters and two brothers. He was born in Cambridge the son of John and Ellen M. (Powers) Murphy and lived in Rutland for 40 years.
Joseph graduated from Cambridge High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a Plant Manager for Jamesbury Company in Worcester for many years retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, the Rutland Sportsmen's Club and served on both the Rutland Board of Selectman and the Rutland School Committee. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting, fishing, bird carving and cooking.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23rd in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Joseph will be held on Wednesday, March 24th, from the funeral home with an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick's Church, 258 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will be private in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rutland Lion's Club, P.O. Box 626, Rutland, MA 01543; or to a charity of one's choice.
