WORCESTER - Richard J. Burgess, Sr., 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Saint Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Worcester.

Born in Worcester, Richard was the son of the late William H. and Anna (Malonis) Burgess. He attended Sacred Heart School and went on to graduate from St. Peter's High School. Following high school, he proudly served in the National Guard Reserve. He later built a long and dedicated career as a Laboratory Technician at Wyman-Gordon.

It was during a basketball game that Richard first caught the eye of Lenore Mekjian, who was watching from the stands. On October 1, 1966, Richard married Lenore at St. Catherine of Sweden Church. Together, they settled in Worcester, where they lovingly raised their family and built a life centered on faith, community, and devotion to one another.

A gifted athlete, Richard was inducted into the St. Peter’s Hall of Fame for both baseball and basketball and went on to play semi-professional baseball. He remained active in sports throughout his life, enjoying umpiring softball games and candlepin bowling. Summers were especially cherished, as the family made lasting memories during their annual trips to Hampton Beach.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Lenore; his children, Deborah A. Burgess of Worcester, and Richard J. Burgess, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Holden; and his cherished grandchildren, Alaina, Reanne, and Kate Burgess. He also leaves many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Marie A. (Burgess) Manzello, William H. Burgess, Jr., James F. Burgess, and Joan C. Burgess.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Interment will immediately follow at St. John's Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester.
