d. July 13, 2022

WEST BOYLSTON/ENGELWOOD, FL - Richard Mason Chapman, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022 in Sarasota, Florida at the age of 86.

He leaves his wife, Betty (Richardson) Chapman, and one stepdaughter, Martine Bellville. He also leaves five children from a previous marriage to Janet (Cutler) Chapman – David and his wife Nancy, Jeffrey and his wife Pamela, Andrew and his partner Allison, Stephen and his wife Sheryl and Stephanie and her husband Rob Sequin. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a stepson, Russell Farnsworth.

Richard, or Dickie as he was known was born on March 26, 1936 and lived most of his life in West Boylston, Massachusetts. After graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in 1958, Richard moved to Sacramento, California where he worked for the State of California. In 1959, Dick moved back to Massachusetts where he worked at R.E. Chapman Company, a drilling company that was founded by his father in 1926. Richard served as President of the company from 1975 until 1999. During his tenure as President the Company grew to be one of the largest drilling firms in the northeast, at one time employing over 80 people. Dickie was very involved with both the Massachusetts and New England Ground Water Associations and worked tirelessly to help organize the annual New England Water Well Expo for many years. He was also a Master Groundwater Contractor with the National Groundwater Association and took great pride in wearing his “Green Jacket” at the NGWA conferences every year.

In his earlier days Dick enjoyed camping and was an avid sailor and racer of catamarans. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cards and time with his family. After retiring in 2001, Dick spent several years driving school buses to events for First Student in West Boylston, a job that he thoroughly enjoyed. Dick was also President of the Trustees and Superintendent of Grounds at the High Plains Cemetery in West Boylston. Dickie was best known to family and anyone he met for his sense of humor, able to bring a smile or laugh to any day; that laughter will be sorely missed.
