STERLING — Robert T. “Rob” Mahar died peacefully, with his family by his side, at UMass Medical Center on September 9, 2017 after a brief illness. He was 48.Rob was born in Worcester. He attended Perkins School in Lancaster, and Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown. After leaving school he resided in Princeton, and then Sterling, where he was a participant in Seven Hills Foundation programs since 1993.Showing an appreciation for music and art from an early age, Rob enjoyed attending shows at the Worcester Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and summer concerts in Princeton and Sterling. He loved observing nature and being outdoors, enjoying many visits to Tower Hill Botanical Garden, walks on the Central Mass Rail Trail, trips to Crane’s Beach and especially the New England Aquarium in Boston.Rob brightened the lives of many people with his gentle, loving and accepting nature and he will be greatly missed.He is survived by his parents, Robert and Marion Mahar of Sterling; his sister, Molly Mahar Kerr and her husband, Brian of Waitsfield, VT; his long-time teacher and friend, Patricia McDaid of Calais, ME; along with his many friends who loved him. His family wishes to thank the dedicated and caring staff at the Seven Hills’ Mahar House in Sterling, where he lived; the large and dedicated staff of the Seven Hills Foundation for all their support, as well as the staff of the UMass Medical Center 7th floor ICU for their compassionate care.A celebration of Rob’s life will be held at Wachusett Mountain Ski Area on October 18th from 5 to 7 PM.
