Robert James Martin Jr.

HOLDEN – Robert James Martin Jr. of Holden, Massachusetts, passed away on September 24, 2026, at the age of 89.

Robert, known to those who loved him as Bob, Dad, and Poppy lived a full life defined by family, faith, service, generosity, a distinguished career in law, and a wonderful sense of humor.

Bob was first married to his beloved wife, Margot, with whom he built a family and shared close to 40 years before her passing. He was later blessed to find love again with his wife, Mary (Henrich) Martin, who became his devoted companion and an important part of his life for 20 plus years.

He was the loving father of his sons, Robert James Martin III (Sheila) and Jeffrey W. Martin (Diana), and the proud Poppy of his grandchildren, Madeline (John), Lauren, and Robert James “Robby” IV. His family was an important and treasured part of his life.

Bob’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. Deeply devoted to his faith, he found strength and comfort in prayer and faithfully read from his prayer book each day. His devotion was not simply something he spoke about, but something he quietly practiced as part of his daily life.

Bob proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserve, a reflection of the sense of duty and commitment that remained important throughout his life.

Bob graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and Boston College Law School and went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career as a lawyer. For more than 50 years, he practiced law with Mirick, O’Connell, DeMallie & Lougee, where he devoted much of his professional life to the firm and the clients he served.

Bob also believed deeply in giving back. A generous philanthropist, he supported causes and organizations that were important to him and sought to make a positive difference in his community and in the lives of others. His generosity reflected the values by which he lived—faith, compassion, service, and a commitment to helping others.

Beyond his professional accomplishments and community contributions, those closest to Bob will remember his wit, warmth, stories, and wonderful sense of humor. He had a way of making people smile, and his memorable sayings became part of the fabric of his family.

Bob leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and a lifetime of memories that will be treasured. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and Poppy, a man of deep faith, a proud Army Reserve veteran, a respected lawyer, a generous philanthropist, and a man whose humor and personality left an enduring impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bob’s family from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 11th, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, October 12th, at St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Burial will be held privately at a later date.
