HOLDEN – Shirley E. (Hamilton) Putnam Truesdell, 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Holden Rehab and Nursing Center after a brief illness.
Her husband of 42 years, Arthur L. Truesdell, passed away in 2007. Her first husband, George L. Putnam, passed away in 1963 after 23 years of marriage. She leaves a son, Bruce G. Putnam of Nevada; two daughters, Gail P. Rockefeller and her husband Gerrit of Lebanon, CT and Wendy J. Johansen and her husband Richard of Ashford, CT; two step-daughters, Rebecca Pierce-Merrick and her husband Brian of West Barnstable and Jane Papaz and her husband Michael of Westborough; eight grandchildren, Glynn Rockefeller, Geoffrey Rockefeller, Shelly Johansen Simpier, Erin Johansen, Lindsey Johansen Guay, Katy Pierce Sullivan, Meryl Papaz and Jenna Papaz; nine great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Wendell Hamilton and a sister, Barbara Lindberg.
Shirley was born in Worcester, the daughter of Walter H. and Alice G. (Turner) Hamilton. She lived in Peterboro, NH for 5 years. After returning to Worcester, she graduated from Commerce High School in 1936 and worked in the billing department of Norton Company. In 1940, after her marriage to George Putnam, the couple moved to Manchester, CT, where she resided for 25 years. After her marriage to Arthur Truesdell in 1965, she moved to Holden. Shirley was a member of Greendale Peoples Church in Worcester for over 50 years.
Shirley enjoyed gardening, doing puzzles, decorating for all of the holidays and traveling.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Holden Rehab and Nursing Center for the loving, compassionate care Shirley received while a resident there the past two years. She loved playing and winning bingo along with taking part in all the activities offered. She was well known for her bright smile and infectious laugh heard throughout the nursing home.
Funeral service for Shirley will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A private committal service will be held at Buckland Cemetery in Manchester, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holden Rehab and Nursing Center, Residents Activity Fund, 32 Mayo Drive, Holden, MA 01520.
