WORCESTER – Longtime Worcester musician, Stephen “Wilbur” Going, 66, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2019 after a valiant fight against complications of open heart surgery.
Wilbur’s love of music started early in high school and began with Sunrise Express, leading to the very successful and popular band, Wilbur and the Dukes. A stage presence as band leader and bass guitarist as well as his powerful vocals gained him a notable reputation and respect within the music community. Along with the many benefits he organized with his band members, Stephen also worked tirelessly for those recovering from addiction. He volunteered at the Worcester House of Correction and made himself available to those needing mentoring or support in their recovery.
Born in Stamford, CT and raised in Northborough, Steve graduated from Algonquin Regional High School. He was a master salesman due to his vibrant personality and spent many years working at Gordon Aluminum and PVC Industries. Steve also opened his own business in 2004, Sun City Tanning.
This beloved man is survived by his children, Caitlin Going and her husband, James Broadhurst and Jared Going and his wife, Martha; his sister, Joanne Nelson and her husband, Dom who was not only Steve’s brother-in-law, but his best friend; his three grandchildren, Maddy, Cian and Aurora; two nephews, Tom Nelson and his wife, Lindsay and Richard Nelson and his wife, Kathryn; and a great-niece, Hayden Mae. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Marion (McGrane) Going and a brother, Richard Going.
Stephen’s family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, doctors and medical staff at Beth Israel Medical Center, UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, 6 ICU and Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital - Westborough for the kindness and support they offered to Steve during his illness.
In every aspect, Wilbur was larger than life itself and he will be missed by all.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with Stephen’s family on Saturday, May 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Miles-STERLING Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A funeral service honoring Steve’s life will be held on Sunday, May 19th, at 12 noon in the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
