HOLDEN - Susan Mary (Rugg) Whipple, 74, died in the presence of her loving husband, James H. Whipple, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at UMass Memorial Healthcare - University Campus, Worcester. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Elizabeth (Callahan) and Melvin F. Rugg and lived in Holden for 48 years.
Susan or "Soupy" as she was affectionately known, graduated from St. Peter's High School in Worcester and earned her L.P.N. from Quinsigamond Community College and later earned her R.N. from Mount Wachusett Community College. She devoted her career to the patients at Holden Nursing Home and Wachusett Extended Care in Holden, retiring in 2014. Soupy was a member of St. Mary's Church in Jefferson. She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and had been a gifted swimmer. Soupy cherished her family and enjoyed many trips to the family cottage in West Yarmouth.
Soupy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 51 years, James H. Whipple; her son, John Whipple and his wife, Marlene of Holden; her daughter, Pam Clarkson and her husband, Chuck of Gardner; her beloved grandchildren, Benjamin and Andrew Whipple, Douglas Muse and Benjamin Clarkson; her brothers, Paul Rugg of West Yarmouth and Donald Rugg of Marstons Mills; 2 nieces and 1 nephew.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Soupy's family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019 at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 23rd at St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Susan will be laid to rest in Grove Cemetery, Holden in the spring. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
