RUTLAND – Tauno Ketonen, 94, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Holden Rehab and Nursing Center after an illness. He was born in Worcester, the son of Waino and Selma (Leino) Ketonen and had lived in Rutland for most of his life.
His wife of 62 years, Ila L. (Schmachtenberger) Ketonen, passed away in 2004. He leaves a son, John T. Ketonen and his companion Holly Kennedy of Barre; a daughter, Katherine R. Clark and her husband Leroy of Rutland; three grandchildren, Heidi Fields of Hartsville, SC, Tammy Moore of Princeton and Kym Clark of Westminster; and five great-grandchildren.
Tauno graduated from North High School in Worcester, the University of Connecticut and did graduate work at Worcester State College. He was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the China-Burma-India Theater. Tauno was a computer programmer and system analyst for Weyerhaeuser in Fitchburg and later was a computer programmer for ECS Company in Worcester. Previously he owned and operated his own chicken farm and logging company in Rutland. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester, the Central Mass Ham Radio Club and the Montachusett Radio Club. He was a charter member of Opera Worcester, a member of the Rutland Players Club and the Finnish Heritage Society, Sovittaja in Rutland. Avid travelers, Tauno and Ila attended Elderhostels and traveled all around the world together.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staffs of both Holden Rehab and Nursing Center and to the Notre Dame Hospice for their excellent care given to Tauno over the past two years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Burial will private and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Hospice, 557 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
