HUBBARDSTON – Theodore H. Curtis, 89, of Flagg Road, passed away peacefully under the loving care of his family and the staff of the Rose Monahan Hospice Home on Monday, August 29, 2011. He was born in Worcester, son of Varnum P. and Lillian L. (Hunter) Curtis, and lived in Rutland in Worcester before moving to Hubbardston 60 years ago. He was a graduate of South High School in Worcester.
Mr. Curtis was owner and operator of Curtis Lumber for over 60 years, Curtsey Jersey Dairy Farm for 20 years, and owned with his family Peaceful Acres Campground, all in Hubbardston. He was very active for the Town of Hubbardston and proudly served on the Board of Selectman for 30 years, the Council on Aging and the Parks and Recreation Committee. In 1990 the new town recreation fields were dedicated in his name, known as Curtis Field.
He was a member and Past Master of the Isaiah Thomas Lodge of Masons now Morning Star Lodge in Worcester; and was Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Brookfield 21st Masonic District. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and was a member of the NRA, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Logger’s Association and the National Pallet Association.
His wife of 52 years, Marilyn B. (Mosher) Curtis, died in 2004. He is survived by his daughter, Carol L. (Curtis) Boucher and her husband Brian of Hubbardston; his sister, Roberta Garbutt and her husband Ralph of San Diego, CA; and nephews and nieces. Three sisters, Eleanor and Claire Curtis and Joan Whitehead, and a brother, Varnum Curtis, predeceased him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 2, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, Rutland. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the VNA Care Hospice, Rose Monahan Home, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608-1280.
