Thomas 'Tom' J. Cunningham

PAXTON – Thomas "Tom" J. Cunningham, Jr., 85, of Pleasant Street, died peacefully on Thursday, July 21, 2011 under the loving care of his family and staff at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, Worcester, after a long illness. His wife of 46 years, Ann F. (McCarthy) Cunningham, died in 2009.

Tom was born in Worcester, son of Thomas J. and Nellie H. (Ford) Cunningham, and graduated from Commerce High School in 1944. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in the 749th Tank Battalion, 63rd Chemical Division in Germany, Europe and in the United States.

He is survived by two daughters, Ellen M. McLean and her husband James of Paxton and Sandra Reardon of New Hampshire; four grandsons, Andrew McLean and his wife Catherine, Thomas and James McLean and Brian Adams; and nephews and nieces. A sister, Mary (Cunningham) Cooper of New York predeceased him.

Tom was the former proprietor of Tatnuck Square Gulf Station in Worcester and Cunningham Oil Company in Paxton and the former manager of State Liquor Exchange in Worcester. He was an active member of the Paxton community where he resided for 77 years. He was a member of the Board of Selectman for nine years and the Town Fire Inspector for 13 years. Tom was a member of the Paxton School Committee and representative to the Wachusett Regional School Committee, and served on the Paxton School Building Committee and School Needs Study Committee. He was also a member of St. Columba Church, the Paxton American Legion Post 306, the Sons of Paxton Club and served 36 years as a Corporator for Barre Savings Bank.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral will be held on Monday, July 25, from the funeral home with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Columba Church, 10 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery, 251 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory may be made to VNA Care Hospice, Rose Monahan Hospice Home, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
